October 2026: two planets turn back, the Hunter's Moon rises, and Scorpio season begins
Everything in the sky this month, computed from where the planets actually are, what astrology has traditionally made of it, and what dream science can and can't tell you. Astrology here is a lens for reflection, not a force acting on you.

PiscesFeb 19 – Mar 20The dreamer's sign, with an empty skyDreamsflying, swimming, knowing you're dreaming Your sign isn't where the stars are anymore. Earth slowly wobbles on its axis, so over the last two thousand years the signs have drifted about 24° away from the constellations they're named after. For almost all of October, while astrology says the Sun is in Libra and then Scorpio, it's actually in front of the stars of Virgo. It reaches the constellation Scorpius only around Nov 23, stays about a week, then spends some 18 days in front of Ophiuchus, a thirteenth constellation that astrology leaves out.
That isn't a mistake astrologers missed. Since Ptolemy, Western astrology has tied the signs to the seasons, counting from the spring equinox, not to the star patterns.

Scorpio season starts, Mercury turns back, Venus slips back into Libra, and the year's last full moon before Halloween lands in Taurus, the sign directly opposite Scorpio. You won't find many weeks this crowded. If you keep a dream journal, this is the week to write everything down, so you can look back at it once Mercury and Venus turn forward in mid-November.

Traditional astrology (Ptolemy, Lilly) uses only the seven planets visible to the eye. Uranus (found 1781), Neptune (1846) and Pluto (1930) were added by modern astrologers, and we label them that way. Retrograde station dates are calculated and can be off by about a day.

The moon this month
Phase meanings follow the astrologer Dane Rudhyar's The Lunation Cycle, in our own words. The sleep findings are real studies, including the one that didn't replicate.
Last Quarter · Oct 3 · in Cancer
Rudhyar saw the last quarter as a turning point in how you think, a time to question what you've been doing before the cycle ends.New Moon · Oct 10 · in Libra
The start of a cycle. Rudhyar described it as impulse without clear form yet: something beginning that you can't fully see.First Quarter · Oct 18 · in Capricorn
A crisis in action, in his terms: the point where a new thing meets resistance and you either push on or drop it.Full Moon · Oct 26 · in Taurus · the Hunter's Moon
Illumination: what started at the new moon is now fully visible. A quirk of the old tradition: Taurus is where the Moon is said to be "exalted," at its strongest. Dream scienceIn a 2013 sleep-lab study (Cajochen et al., Current Biology), people slept about 20 minutes less and had less deep sleep around the full moon. A larger re-analysis a year later didn't find the effect (Cordi et al., 2014). A 2021 field study (Casiraghi et al., Science Advances) found people went to bed later and slept less on the nights before a full moon. Lighter sleep can mean more remembered dreams; that's as far as the science goes.Your dreams this month

Love and Hunter's Moon lines count the houses from your sun sign (whole-sign houses, the old method most sun-sign horoscopes use), with house meanings from William Lilly.

Astrology links Scorpio with endings and what's hidden. Dream research says dreams replay what's on your mind. Put the two together and this is a good week to write your dreams down and see what keeps coming back.
