Why the Moon Turns Red

During a lunar eclipse, Earth moves between the sun and the moon. You might expect the moon to simply go dark — but it doesn't. It turns red, and the reason is genuinely beautiful.

The only sunlight still reaching the moon has passed through Earth's atmosphere first. Our atmosphere scatters blue wavelengths and lets red ones through, which is why sunsets look orange. That filtered red light bends around the planet and lands on the lunar surface.

So the color you're looking at is, quite literally, every sunrise and sunset happening on Earth at that moment, projected onto the moon.

This is the part people miss: a solar eclipse is only visible from a narrow path a few dozen miles wide, which is why most people never see one. A lunar eclipse is visible from the entire night half of the planet at once. If it's dark where you are and the sky is clear, you can see this one.

And unlike the August 12 solar eclipse, no eye protection is needed. Eclipse glasses are for looking at the sun. Looking at an eclipsed moon is as safe as looking at any moon.

The Full Moon in Pisces: What the Sign Adds

Astrologically, this eclipse is a full moon in Pisces — and of the twelve signs, Pisces is the one traditionally associated with sleep, dreams, intuition and the unconscious. For anyone who pays attention to their dreams, it's a fitting night.

It also closes a window. The August 12 solar eclipse fell in Leo — identity, visibility, being seen. This one lands in the opposite territory: what you feel rather than what you show, the parts that surface when you're not performing. Traditional readings frame a Pisces full moon as a time for release rather than pursuit — finishing rather than starting.

Take that as symbolism, not physics. It's a lens people have used for a very long time, and it's a useful one for reflection — but it isn't a prediction.

Does a Full Moon Actually Affect Sleep?

There's more evidence here than skeptics expect and less than believers hope.

A widely cited 2013 study in Current Biology re-analyzed sleep-lab data and found that around the full moon, participants took roughly five minutes longer to fall asleep and slept about twenty minutes less — in windowless rooms, with no idea what phase the moon was in. Later studies have found smaller effects or none, and the debate is genuinely unsettled.

What's not in doubt: if you stay up past midnight to watch a red moon, you will sleep less and your REM cycles will shift. Disrupted sleep produces more dream recall — you remember more when you wake during or shortly after REM. So more people than usual will wake up on August 28 with a dream they actually remember.

Lunar Eclipse Dreams: What They Mean

Eclipse dreams — a darkening sky, a red or vanishing moon, sudden loss of light — tend to show up during transitions. Something familiar is being obscured, and whatever replaces it isn't visible yet. That's the shape of the symbol.

Traditional dream dictionaries read a solar eclipse as an interrupted sense of self, and a lunar eclipse as something emotional going temporarily dark — feelings you can't quite locate, or a mood whose source you can't name.

But the symbol is the smaller half. How the dream felt matters more than what was in it. A red moon witnessed with awe and a red moon witnessed with dread are two different dreams wearing the same image. Start with the feeling and work backward.
